The unconscious techniques widely used to prevent a person from Anxiety are known to be called Defense Mechanisms. Repeated Ego Defenses may hinder a person’s ability to deal with feelings and emotions. In the psychoanalytic proposition, any group of internal processes enables the mind to bargain in unresolved conflicts to conceal from internal drives or passions that hang to lower tone- regard or provoke Anxiety. It first arose from the work of Sigmund Freud. His daughter Anna Freud (1936) enumerated 10 of these later in future too. To avoid uncomfortable passions and feelings, people use these Defense Mechanisms.

Denial involves in turndown to admitting a threatening situation to cover themselves from inviting fear or Anxiety. It is a Defense medium to manage distressing passions by disowning reality. Denial principally replaces the stressor or anxious feeling with some fictional fantasies. The Denial Mechanism can be positive in a beyond-control situation where staying hopeful can be helpful in serious illness. Whereas denial can stop a person from dealing with what bears their attention, it may be easier to ignore the bad habits of ordinate drinking than to hew on alcohol.

Suppression involves removing disagreeing events from the conscious memory by allowing to block uncomfortable passions, feelings and impulses while the person is ignorant that they are doing it. It is a picky forgetting to stop mindfulness of unwanted studies or recollections.

These repressed notions have been a spot in dreams and slip-of-tongue phenomena. People Repress their unexplained phobias that stem from traumatic events. Repression is familiar with suppression which involves consciously avoiding passion and eagerly trying to forget them.

Defense Mechanism to Reduce Anxiety

Projection occurs when inferior studies of oneself project to others. It involves attributing unwanted passions, motives and studies to another person. A man who feels insecure about his manliness mocks other men for acting like women. One can fete and overcome protuberance by tone reflection and being honest with oneself about what can make one insecure and anxious.

Displacement is another Defense medium directing your passions on a cover target rather than the real. While replying to the source, our mind’s senses can be vigorous and dangerous. So, the frustration of someone different who might be superior can be projected on someone differently, someone from the family or perhaps getting involved in cross-burnings.

Reaction Formation is a cerebral defence medium of a person unconsciously replacing thought with its opposite, often expressed in an exaggerated or showy way. A boy subconsciously is attracted to a girl but can not face the reality of his romantic feelings, so he bullies her instead of appreciation and expresses distaste toward her.

Rationalisation occurs when one tries to make up respectable defences for an inferior gesture. When one finds it tough to accept, make up logical arguments. Explain God’s will as a reason for a natural disaster.

Another Defense Mechanism proposed by Anna Freud was Regression. In response to a stressful situation, a person’s act-out behaviours are from an earlier stage of development. A child may begin to water-soak bed when spending some time at the dentist.

Identification is another Defense medium where one tries to come to someone different to deal with Anxiety or develops a behavioural pattern by observing others as a person who admires the hero and tries to copy the life.

Compensation occurs when one tries to compensate for areas demanded by getting superior in other areas. It’s said to pay for a real or imagined insufficiency with a specific gesture. A person with limited means may direct their investment into achieving over and beyond what’s enough at work.

Sublimination is turning socially inferior gestures or urges into respectable ones. For example, a very aggressive person may come as a mixed martial trades fighter.

Research stated maladaptive behaviour showed an immature Defense Mechanism, whereas a balanced personality established a conforming mature Defense Mechanism. Counselling or Talk Therapy, Stress Management and Medication is widely used in treating Defense Mechanism.
